Talk to us about being a person of colour who has faced homelessness or insecure housing

We want to raise awareness of how people from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups have to face homelessness and insecure housing more often than others, because of structural inequality and systemic racism.

To do this we want to understand experiences of inequality in different parts of life like housing, education, healthcare (such as access to mental health services), immigration and justice systems, and the impact this is having on the lives of people of colour.

We’d like to hear from you if you identify as a person of colour or being from a Black, Asian, or other minoritised ethnic community in the UK, and you’ve been forced into homelessness or lived in insecure housing - either presently, or at any point in the last 10 years.

We want to speak to people in England, Scotland, and Wales.

We also want to speak to people of colour who in addition to poor housing have experienced one or more of the following:

  • Contact with the justice system (e.g. prisons, police, or courts)
  • Additional physical or mental health needs, including disabilities
  • Negative school-based experiences (e.g. bullying, detentions, or school exclusions)
  • Citizenship or immigration-related challenges
  • Identifying as LGBTQIA+

How can you get involved?

We are running 1-hour, one-to-one interviews with Crisis staff and peer researchers who have personal experiences like those mentioned above. If you’re eligible to take part in the research you can also receive £20 as a thank you for your time.

If you’d like to share your experience, please email research@crisis.org.uk with ‘Racism and Homelessness’ as the subject heading and one of our team will respond to you. We can share an information sheet with more details about taking part.

If you have a case worker or lead worker, they are also welcome to email our team directly if it’s easier for them to get in contact on your behalf, or to find out more about our project.
